Churches to Visit

I know we’re not in Europe or somewhere ancient like that. Old for us is the 1920's. Set aside your age prejudices and pretend like these places are old

Bethesda-by-the-Sea
141 S. County Rd., PB

Bethesda 1.JPGSo I included Bethesda twice, can you tell I love it? I’m not going to even pretend to know the proper descriptions for types of buildings but I love the style of Bethesda. I love all of the stone and wood beams in this church. I guess a good word to use for the interior would be unadorned. There are decorative bits but for the most part it’s rather basic.
St. Edward Catholic Church
144 N. County Rd., PB

St. Edwards 2.JPGI can not believe how long I lived here before I went in this church. I actually lived just around the corner for a year and never went in. I don’t know what I do with my time sometimes. I heard this is the church Jackie Kennedy went to when she was in PB. It’s very beautiful. Very (I sound like I’m 5) shiny. It actually makes me think of the light in S. Florida. I know it’s brighter here than further north (the equator and all of that) - well this church just emphasizes that.
St. Ann Catholic Church
310 N. Olive Ave., WPB
832-3757

IMG_6332.JPGThis would be a good church to go into the next time you go to the WPB Greenmarket. It’s a very charming church. Right next door to the main church are the church offices. I had to run in there for something the other day and I was so surprised. It’s a great building, so go in there too.
Royal Poinciana Chapel
60 Coconut Row, PB
655-4212

Big Tree 2.JPGI don’t think this church keeps it’s doors open like the others do, but you can always look in the windows if you want to see inside. I really included it for the outside. I love the grounds of Poinciana Chapel. Behind the church is “the big tree.” That’s the official name we’ve given, I think it’s a Kapok tree. Part of the church grounds is also Seagull cottage. The church uses this historic building. It’s one of the few truly historic buildings around here.
