Grocery Stores

Grocery shopping can be pretty boring.  If you are systematic in your lack of planning like I am, you're at the store almost everyday.  But, I have found ways to make grocery shopping an "experience".  First, treat yourself well when you go.  This may be the closest some of us get to exercise during the day, so stay hydrated and well nourished.  Just don't forget to pay for what you eat.  Second, supplement the staples with luxury items of the grocery store biz.  Fancy meat or cheese from a small local shop or a pre-made take-away treat.  Don't forget we're being gatherers.  It's a noble calling.

Publix
You can't turn around without tripping over one. You don't need my help with that one. Some Publix stores have different items than others. Publix on Southern has arepas (no fat corn cakes from Guatemala - yum), Publix in CityPlace has a pretty limited selection but it's convenient (for some!) and Publix in Palm Beach has valet parking.
Farmer's Emporium
4619 Okeechobee Blvd., WPB
615-4224
A friend of mine found this place and what a find it is. It's in the same shopping center as the Honey Baked ham store. They have a pretty limited selection of produce but the prices and quality are fantastic. My friend also liked to go to the Italian shop in the same shopping center but I haven't been there (she's Italian so the tip on Farmer's Emporium was quite a recommendation - and when I say "Italian" I mean - she lives in Italy and she was here for 9 months so you'd better listen because they are really, really picky about their produce).
Costco
1873 W. Lantana Rd., Lantana
535-0958
3250 Northlake Blvd., PBG 624-1693
I'm not a member of Costco but a couple of friends of mine are and they love going there. There are two locations around here to go to. I don't have the storage for buying there but I thought they were worth mentioning.
Whole Foods
11701 Lake Victoria Gardens, PBG
691-8550
www.wholefoodsmarket.com
whole foods pga.JPGIf you just got into town maybe five minutes ago you don't know where this is. It's in Downtown. Lots of people like to go there but I think it's really expensive. When I go to Downtown (see Shopping - should be a big section coming up) I go to Whole Foods for one item. It's Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Juice. Not cider, please let's not jump to conclusions. This comes in soda sized bottles. It's just like soda but with apple juice. Makes me want to take a trip up to PGA right now.
Carmine's Gourmet Market
2401 PGA Blvd, PBG
775-0105
This is just west of the intracostal on PGA. I don't go here often. I don't know why. There are some things that are inexplicable, but my husband's grandmother goes there a lot and she always brings my husband the best soup. Carmine's has a lot of things you can take home which is a big plus.
Market Salamander
155 N. County Rd., PB
659-6772
www.market-salamander.com
Market Salamander 2.JPGThis is a relatively new market in Palm Beach next to Green’s Pharmacy on N. County. I’ve seen Palm Beachers zipping in and out of this place often enough lately to know that it’s catching on. My husband’s grandmother has gotten wonderful veal here and she just got the best chicken salad that I, well, I “removed” it from her refrigerator. I’m sure she didn’t want the rest of it. I just found out that they have wine tastings on Thursdays. Yum. I’m sure if you check their website you can find a more current schedule. They have a sommelier. Sommelier. Sommelier. Don’t you love that word. That’s one job I’d do just so I could call myself that.
Toojay's Gourmet Deli
313 Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach
659-7232
11701 Lake Victoria Gardens, PBG
622-3262
www.toojays.com
This is actually a restaurant but I put it under grocery because I prefer to go to Too Jays for their deli meat. There are a couple of locations. The one in Palm Beach is between the Flagler Museum and Royal Poinciana and there's another good one on PGA at Downtown. The deli meat I have had from there is some of the best I've ever had.
C'est si Bon
280 Sunset Ave., PB
659-6503
www.csbgourmet.com
Cest si Bon.JPGThis little shop is just across the street from Publix in Palm Beach on Sunset. This is where, when I'm feeling flush, I like to get grated Parmesan cheese here. They also have great soups and some other to go items. I love this store.
WPB Green Market
www.wpb.org/greenmarket/
WPB Greenmarket 3.JPGThis is only seasonal on Saturday mornings from about October to April. It's located on Narcissus behind the, soon to be, old city hall. This is where I get the heirloom tomatoes that are grown locally and sold to the Palm Beach Grill. There are a number of great vendors here but until the first market of the season starts you won't really know who paid for space. In the past there have been french bakeries, Renaissance bakery, a crepe maker, great flower stalls, a guacamole booth, and loads of others.
