Shopping for the Body (as in clothes)

I much prefer shopping for my kids but that's just because everything looks great on them. Other than the obvious chain stores, these are the ones I like down here.

LF 2.JPGThis funky boutique store has been open for almost two years in the Downtown PGA shopping center. It’s an LA based store but the look is definitely SoFla. The brands that LF carries are either up and coming LA designers or European brands. There are jeans by Furst Premium and Era of Chaos and t-shirts by Emma & Sam.

I loved tons of things in this place. After a couple of minutes I decided that LF is like a cooler, younger sister to Anthropologie. It has something of the same feel; eclectic, hip clothes but just a little bit edgier. My favorite things that I saw were the woven white shirts. There were a number of beautiful ones that would look so fab with dark skinny jeans.

IMG_5976.JPGA fabulous new clothing store in the same space where Vignettes used to be, right next to Jane Loves Cheap Furniture. If hip chicks start flocking to Lake Worth it will be due, in part, to this store. The owner, Kourtney, has a great sense of style that she brings to her every aspect of her shop. There are not only women’s clothes (there were some beautiful tunics and short shorts when I was there), but also paintings, jewelry and other home items. Ooohh, there were also some beautiful dresses - shifts and drapey pieces. Note to self...get some sun on legs...

IMG_5937.JPGA friend of mine lived in Spain for a while and she told me about Zara. Before it opened at the Gardens I braved the Adventura Mall south of Fort Lauderdale to shop there. I liked going especially because I was able to practice my Spanish. But, Gardens is more convenient. My HUGE complaint about this store is they didn't open a children's department. Adventura has one so I may have to go back, because, what's the point. But, this store is absolutely wonderful for moderately priced clothes. I have three shirts from Zara and I haven't seen anything like them in any other store. Also, two of them were under $40 but don't tell anybody. I just can't believe that they didn't open a children's section. My daughter had the cutest pair of pants from them - I think they were maybe $19. Road trip.

IMG_5939.JPGI have found my inner prom queen.  I've always known about Betsey Johnson but I've never really looked at her clothes up close.  I'm in LOVE!!!  They're so vintage!  I love the detailing on her pieces.  I couldn't stop myself from picking out dress after dress and holding it up in front of me in front of the mirror and asking my friend "what about this one???"

It reminds me of the time a year or so ago, I was down in Coconut Grove and I walked into a vintage clothing show (right next to the library).  There were loads of dresses from the 50's that had a similar feel.  But, unlike that show, Betsey Johnson makes 'em new and in a bunch of different sizes because one size definitely does not fit all (at least in my world).

I need to go to a party!!!

C.Orricco.JPGTo Lily or not to Lily. Do you wear one or not? Wear one of course!!! Are you crazy? You're in Palm Beach - it's like our uniform. Once I went to a party where the dress code was "Lily" attire and I really, really wanted to wear black that day. Did I? No. Look, I now call the first Lily I bought "vintage". I love my Lily's and you have to go to C. Orrico to buy one. I know, they carry them at other stores, but you're not going to have nearly the selection there as you would here. Little tip. In the summer, start going and checking out the sales. The Lily stuff will go on sale (kid things too). The longer you wait, the better chance of a greater discount but things don't stick around so if you really want it you better buy it. Another thought, C. Orrico always has a great window display at their store on County road in Palm Beach. As I was craning my neck around to look at the new one the other day I thought to myself "One of these days I'm going to have a real interesting accident to explain to the police." Good thing the police station and fire rescue is just across the street.
Spring Flowers

www.SpringFlowersChildren.com

Spring Flowers 5.jpgBefore you even go in this store, you have to stop and look in the windows. The amazing displays of children’s clothes will give you a big hint of what’s to come.

Inside you’ll find an almost exclusive collection of European lines. The one main exception is Joan Calabrese, who is worth the departure back to the US. What makes Spring Flowers so unique is their relationship with Fleurisse, for girls, and Leon, for boys. This French line is custom made for Spring Flowers using French, Italian and English fabrics (think Liberty...). You have to see these dresses to believe them. The sizes range from 3 months to 12 years (sometimes you'll be able to find one in a 14).  One of my treats to myself is to go in and look at the new arrivals of Fleurisse.

SF also has boys blazers by Hickey Freeman and DeTomasso. And don’t miss the beautiful Italian made shoes made especially for the store.

IMG_5946.jpgThere are a number of things I covet in this store for my daughter. One, the things the owners buy that they have monogrammed. There was this one dress that had strappy straps (how else would I say that?) that they had a giant butterfly monogrammed onto the lower part of the skirt. Also, they carry a company from Spain that is exquisite. My friend that lived in Spain for a while used to bring me dresses that were the same quality (my kids dress WAY better than me). There are also great pyjamas, smocked dresses, car seat covers, gift things, and boy clothes. The sizes usually only go up to 6 so go while you can. Fun thing to do: look at the Christmas cards and birth announcements that people send to the store.

My new favorite line that they carry is called Pears and Bears.  It's tres cute.  I could see a little girl (namely my own) in one of the beachy tops with white pants riding a pink bike along the sidewalk on Ocean Ave (in my dream my two year old would be riding a two wheeler).  Absolutely normal.
Pastel
139 N. County Rd., PB

This store has been around for quite a while. They're off the main drag around the corner from Green's Pharmacy. They have a really good small baby selection and some nice bigger girl dresses. They're also a good place to check out for sales in the summer.
Clayeux

Clayeux.JPGThis adorable and funky new children's clothing store is located on Mainstreet at Midtown. It's in the same shopping center as J.Alexander's if that helps you find it. I have had a number of Clayeux things for my daughter and love this brand. This is the first Clayeux store in the United States and I'm so not surprised that they decided to open in the Gardens. The couple running this store are from Burgundy, France. That's where the clothes are made too. Pretty cool. Their sizes range from baby to 12 years - boys and girls. Go, go, go!
Baby Alexandra
4550 PGA Blvd., PBG

www.babyalexandra.com
Baby Alexandra is a wonderful beginning to end store to go to. You can go there to plan your nursery, get the latest in trendy diaper bags and then shop for some serious clothes for baby and toddler. When I was pregnant I was dying for a diaper bag from here (I ended up with a $35 one from Lafayette, LA but that's a story for another day). Love this store.
PB Boys Club

Reasons why I go to this store: Safe Sea lotion to keep off the sea lice; navy blazers for my son; preppy belts with soccer balls on them for previously mentioned son.
Aristokids

www.aristokids.com
Aristokids.JPGOwned by the same couple that owns PB Boys Club and also two stores down. If you don't mind paying more than Stride Rite, the kids shoes here are great. My daughter has had a number of shoes from here over the years and they have held up really well. Also, I used to always get Petit Bateau things here. There is now a large selection of Roxy things for teens. This store puts up Christmas cards too.
Lil Rapunzel's
253A Royal Poinciana Way, PB

www.shoprapunzels.com
The girl who owns this store also owns Rapunzel's Closet. There are two locations of that store, one a couple of shops down from Lil Rapunzel's and the other a couple of shops away from C.Orrico. I just included this shop because I'm feeling too old to shop in Rapunzel's Closet. Maybe when I'm feeling better about myself I'll revisit the issue. ANYWAY, I love this store. For the longest time I incorrectly thought that it was just for babies but there are also things for toddlers, kids and tweens. There was the cutest pair of rubber boots that looked like mary jane shoes the last time I went in. The owner also carries a good selection of Junk Food. They are my new favorite vintage t-shirts. My daughter got a Hello Kitty one.

You can also find great greeting cards in the front of the store. This is a carry-over from when the owner had the store as a gift shop. I was so glad to see she kept the cards as I love them.
Swanson's Creations
6000 Georgia Ave., WPB
585-5244
www.swansoncreations.com
IMG_5971.JPGThere is a certain appeal to Swanson's other than the cute clothes. You have to work for it a little. The store is in a semi-industrial area. Georgia runs parallel to Dixie Hwy and the store is a little north of Forest Hill Blvd. It's part of a long building and all you have to tell you where you are is a faded sign. Knock hard. They may or may not be there. Swanson's clothes are made where they're sold. They are mostly button on the shoulder a-line dresses or short-alls with different designs appliqued on them. The birthday themed one is especially cute. Swanson's is worth the effort. Plus if you're not into an adventure you can order from the website.
Flower Child
219 Royal Poinciana Way #2, PB

IMG_6073.JPGThis is a relatively new shop I found while riding my bike through Via Testa (which I don't actually recommend because it's not really meant for bikes). I was so surprised at the number of adorable outfits I found here. I've been back quite a few times and I know that it will soon be "discovered." I've gotten divine clothes here for my daughter.  A couple of Lily's and a number of European brands.  The owner is buying more and more vintage pieces that I know would have sold for a lot more in an antique or vintage shop. Palm Beach moms can be very thrifty so I'm sure a number of them drop off clothes their kids have outgrown here - it'll be our little secret that we're shopping here.
