Shopping for the Home

If you walk up and down Dixie along Antique Row (north of Southern), you’re going to see some great small antique store or vintage shops. Over the years (I sound like a granny) I’ve seen some good pieces but, the following places are the ones I keep going back to.

Cashmere Buffalo
3709 S. Dixie Hwy, WPB
659-5441
Cashmere Buffalo.JPGI had to start off as I intend to go on. Quirky and fun. This is the only store I go in to buy just one plate to cheer myself up. It’s just north of Southern on Dixie Hwy. There are plenty of vintage pieces to choose from plus textiles and another part of the store devoted to a more mod look. I stopped taking my kids here when my son sat in his stroller with his arms stretched out on each side as I walked between the merchandise. If you’re looking to create a 60's Lily Pulitizer look, this is a great place to start.
Sabina Danenberg Antiques
4900 S. Dixie Hwy, WPB
533-5992

Sabina Danenburg.JPGOkay, I really think I'm going to regret telling you about this store. I'm beginning to question this whole share my secret finds thing I've got going on. Okay, twist my arm. This is THE place to go. The owner, Sabina, has fantastic taste and it shows in the items she puts in her store. She gets fabulous pieces that will work with many different styles of decorating and her prices are great. If you find something you like here, buy it, it will not stay around for long.
Mecox Gardens
333 Worth Ave, PB
805-8611
www.mecoxgardens.com
Mecox Gardens.JPGThis is easily one of the best home stores I’ve been into. I always see things in this store that I know would look wonderful in my home. They have an extensive website that is also worth looking at. There were recently a couple of tufted loveseats that I was dying for. I absolutely didn’t need them but...they were in velvet...
Barzina
66 Via Mizner, PB
833-5834
IMG_5869.JPGThis is a great tucked away little store. And when I say little I mean, leave the stroller outside. Barzina is right across from Piccolo Mondo (which has its advantages believe me). You can get to it from Worth Avenue but it’s closer to Peruvian. The lady who owns this store travels around the world in the summers and finds the most unsual and amazing things. She definitely doesn’t get these things at the Atlanta Market. I have a great pearl bracelet from her that wraps around my wrist a bunch of times. When it gets closer to Christmas she gets in a bunch of food too. It’s fun to go in and get free samples. Also, she carries Christoper Radko ornaments (she only puts them out at Christmas-time) which I love, love, love.
Island Home
249 Royal Poinciana Way, PB
832-6244
Another great home store on the island, I love the beach look that the owner has created in her store. Also, it’s a retailer of Shabby Chic. If you live down here, the bleached, beachey look of this store will never go out of style.
Maine Cottage
312 Clematis St., WPB
366-0033
mainecottage.com

mainecottage.jpgYes, it really happened, Maine Cottage is here.  And right on Clematis of all places.  I love the happy, bright furnishings mixed with the simple and contemporary fabrics used for upholstery.  The great thing about MC is that you can do a whole room out of it and it doesn't look cookie cutter because some pieces look new while others look like updated vintage pieces.

Don't forget to look at the artwork on the walls.  Some of the pieces are by Maine Cottage founder Carol Bass as well as artist Jane Ryan.  These pieces have already been flying out of the store, so if you like it, grab it!

Update:  I just went into the store the other day and my 2 year old grabbed my hand and dragged me to the back of the store to show me "her" bed.  I wonder where she gets her good taste from???

Casa Ceramica
2602 S. Dixie Hwy, Ste 3, WPB
659-7909
www.casaceramica.com

IMG_6287.JPGGood luck picking your favorite tile in this store. I thought I loved a green and white tile that looked rather Moroccan but then I saw it in blue. And that was before I went around the corner and saw the rustic tiles that look like they’ve been around for a hundred years.

Located on Dixie just barely north of Belvedere, Casa Ceramica has an incredible selection of Mediterranean style tiles, 90% of which are currently in stock! I actually had to ask the lady twice about this because I didn’t really believe what I was hearing. You don’t have to wait weeks or months - woohoo! The majority of their products are made in Tunisia which sounds pretty exotic to me. They also have bowls, platters and tons of huge planters (or urns? I don’t know what they’re really called - they go outside...).

Design within Reach
230 Clematis St., WPB
833-1799
www.dwr.com
If you like coffee, you know where this store is. Right next to Starbuck’s. I have been driving past this place for ages and never been in. Thank goodness I finally did. If you were wondering what I liked, stand facing the store, okay, everything on the right side. That’s about it. I love that modern furniture can be so comfortable and beautifully made. Each piece is like a work of art. I think it’s fun, even if you don’t have a completely modern home, to mix some contemporary pieces in with what you have. It’ll work.
Mac Fabrics
428 Clematis, WPB
833-7000
www.macfabrics.com
I have been going to Mac Fabrics as long as I have lived here. I have shopped at a number of other fabric stores and I always end up back at Mac. I used to go in on my lunch break when I worked downtown. I just realized that I still have the fabric that I first bought there about 14 years ago - talk about getting my money’s worth. Mac also does custom drapes, slipcovers, upholstery, pillows, headboards.
Jane Loves Cheap Furniture
201 N. Federal Hwy, LW
547-7868
IMG_5972.JPGThis is one of those store that is so much fun to go into. The owner has a strong sense of style and if you like adding funky pieces to your home, you’ll be in the right place. I know a girl who had a piece of furniture from this store in her daughter’s nursery and it really made the look of the whole room.
